On March 25, 2026, a videoconference meeting was held between experts from both banks of the Nistru River on veterinary and phytosanitary issues.

The meeting was convened at the initiative of Chișinău following an 18-month hiatus.

During the meeting, the participants discussed issues related to compliance, within the relevant sectors, with the requirements of the current national legislation and European Union standards by residents and economic operators from the Transnistrian region.

Experts from Chișinău provided information on the procedures that must be followed when importing fertilizers and pesticides into the Republic of Moldova, in the context of harmonizing legislation and national standards with those of the European Union. They emphasized the mandatory inclusion of such products in the Register of Phytosanitary Products and Fertilizers. At the same time, the importance of the uniform application of standards in this field by all economic operators involved in the production, import, and export of products of animal and plant origin was highlighted.

The discussions also addressed measures for the control and eradication of officially notifiable animal diseases, as well as ensuring access to the Republic of Moldova’s animal health laboratories for diagnostic purposes and official confirmation in the national reference laboratory, in accordance with the requirements of the World Organisation for Animal Health.

In addition, the need to identify and register animals in the Automated Information System “State Animal Register” was underlined, which would enable animal owners from the Transnistrian region to benefit from existing economic opportunities. In this same context, ensuring the movement of live animals and animal products in compliance with veterinary and sanitary requirements was discussed, in order to maintain farmers’ and economic operators’ access to national and international markets.

The importance of ensuring unimpeded access for inspectors of the National Food Safety Agency to authorized economic operators from the Transnistrian region was also emphasized, in order to carry out qualified inspections as a key element in guaranteeing access to both domestic and external markets.

The experts agreed to continue a constructive and pragmatic dialogue aimed at identifying effective solutions to existing issues, in line with current national and European standards, in the interest of citizens on both banks of the Nistru River.
